Radical Reading

Kia ora and welcome back to my blog.

This week in reading we have been learning about different carbon sink like soil, trees and seas. Our goal was to make connections between other texts and general knowledge to expand meaning and pose questions, using more sophisticated texts. We had to read a poem and a text about soil, trees and seas. We had a few parts for our  create. We had to make a sink and put images inside of the sink that impacted your carbon sink. Then we had to  write a few sentences about the cause and the effect.  Our next part of the create was to take a picture of a blank piece of paper with a buddy or a trio and then write a quote about saving the environment. The last part of the create was to do a Venn diagram which is when you compare to or more texts to make connections and ideas. I had to make connections with the poem and the text.

Here is my create.

Overall I really enjoyed making the Venn diagram and the quote.

What do you know about the carbon sink?

Stop Plastic at School

Kia ora and welcome back to my blog

This week in reading we had to do 3 creates and and blog one. I chose to blog about stopping plastic at school. Our goal was to make connections between texts and own life experiences, using more sophisticated texts. We had to read about why plastic is bad for our community. Our create task was to make a poster about why plastic is bad for the environment and our school. You should always put your rubbish in the bin because if you don’t it will end up in the sea.

Here is my create:

Overall I really enjoyed making this create.

What do you know about plastic?

How can we be Champions of Peace

For the last four weeks of Term 3 we were learning about ‘How we can be Champions of Peace’.

Firstly we learnt about the different symbols of peace. Some of these are Raukura, Koru, CND Symbol, Dove and Olive Branch and the V sign.

These symbols represent peace, the CND Symbol was used during the anti-nuclear weapons. In modern times it has become a worldwide peace sign. The Dove and the Olive Branch represents Noah’s Ark, in the story a dove returned after the flood with an Olive Branch. Now the Dove and the Olive Branch is a sign of hope peace.

With these symbols in mind I created a Peace Artwork. My Peace Artwork uses the CND Symbol it shows peace because it helped stop all of the wars and the bombs.

Here is my Artwork

We also created a peace prayer book. I have attached my peace prayer book here.

I enjoyed learning about peace because it gave me a new perspective about it, and it encouraged me to help bring peace to others lives.

I learnt a lot about peace. I learnt that it is sometimes hard to achieve peace but to never give up.

One way I plan on being a champion of peace is by looking out for others if they need help, and to always remember that I am a champion of peace.

How do you show peace?

Reading Between the Lines

Kia ora and welcome back to my blog.

This week in reading my group and I have been learning about reading between the lines which also means inferring. Our goal is to independently predict, interpret and analyse text, ‘reading between the lines’ to gain a deeper meaning. Reading between the lines means when you are looking at a image or reading a book and coming up with new ideas. For our create task we had to find an image and make new ideas about the image. The picture I chose was about a person asking a question to the little boy, the question was “have you honestly got nothing to say?” and the little boy doesn’t reply because he looks guilty. We also had to explain what reading between the lines are.

Here is my create:

Overall I really liked making this create, my favourite part was finding a image and writing about it.

Did you know what reading between the lines was before you read my post?

Woman’s Rights

Kia ora and welcome back to my blog.

This week for reading we have been learning to understand what we are reading, making connections, asking questions, visualising, predicting, inferring and synthesising. Our goal this week was to make connections between texts, using more sophisticated texts. In our Reading workshop we had to read this book called Stand up a history of protest in New Zealand. After reading the book we had to answer some questions, The questions were:

Think about what you already know about protesting.
What protests have you heard of in NZ history?
What about around the world?
Where have you read about them before?

For our create we had a few options to pick from. One of the tasks was to choose a topic from the story and create a poster or placard that you would take to a protest. That’s what I chose to do.

Here is my create

I really enjoyed making this.

What would you make your placard about?

Radical Reading

Kia ora and welcome back to may blog.

This week in reading we have been learning about using knowledge from a text and finding new information. Our goal was to use knowledge from a text to combine with new ideas (own and others) to come up with new thinking. Think while reading, pick up new information, and come up with new ideas and new thinking. We first had to read a book about the Berlin war, and come up with new ideas. For our create we had a few options, one of the options was to pretend that one of our cousins  was on the other side of the Berlin wall. We had to create a text message back forth to each other.

Here is my create:

Overall I really liked this create and making the text messages.

Do you have a cousin that is in a different country to you?

Super Symmetry

Kia ora and welcome back to back blog.

For the next few weeks we are going to be learning about symmetry and geometry. Symmetry is where it looks the same on both sides, if you put a mirror going down in the middle on a picture it would look the same on both sides. This week our create task was to make a floor plan with a symmetrical pattern. One side had to be the same as the other side. We had to use 6 different complementary colours and 6 different shapes. The shapes I used were:

Circles

Triangles

Pentagon

Square

Heart

Here is my create

Overall I really enjoyed making the floor tile, I also liked choosing all of the different colours.

Do you like geometry?

Radical Reading

Kia ora and welcome back to my blog!

This week in reading our goals were to make predictions about a text and look for clues to confirm predictions. Our learn was to watch a few videos and make predictions about the videos. Our create was to use this template the teachers gave us and read one, I chose to write about a text called by the river. Our first step was to predict what the text was about. The second step was to make predictions while reading eg the author has just written this so now I think that… The last step was to confirm the prediction from the start or rethink what you initially thought.

Here is my create:

Overall I really enjoyed making all of my predictions and seeing if they were right at the end.

When do you have to predict something?

Perfect Poems

Kia ora and welcome back to my blog.

For the past few weeks of term 3 we have been learning and writing different styles of poetry. The poems we have learnt about are haiku poems, diamante poems, black out poems, limericks, biographical and list poems.

Haiku poems are a 3 lined poem that the first and third line has 5 syllables and the second line has 7 syllables.

Diamante poems have 5 lines. The first and last line has one word, the second and fourth line has two describing words that you are writing about, and the third line has three words ending in ING.

Black out poems are when you have a page of writing and then you have to circle the words or small sentences that stick out to you. Then you have to colour in the rest of the words black, you will be surprised when you find out that the words you circled actually make a poem.

Next is limericks, limericks are when the poem is a 5 line poem where the first, second and fifth line with each over and the third and fourth line rhyme with each over.

Biographical poems are when you write about somebody and about their interests.

The last poem is called a list poem where you have four words that could be about anything. Once you have chosen the four words then you have to choose some describing words about them.

Here are all of the poems I did.

Overall I really enjoyed doing all of the poems. The blackout poem was my favourite one to do because I didn’t think it would make a poem.

What is your favourite poem?

Science

Kia ora and welcome back to my blog.

Over the past few weeks we have been taking science lessons and have been trying lots of different experiments, one of them was called squishy circuits. There are different ways to make a squishy circuit , one of the ways is to make two lumps of play dough, afterwards you poke just one of the 9V battery leads into each lump of play dough. Next you have to poke one on your LED’s legs into each lump of play dough. If the LED doesn’t light up you have to take it out and turn it around and try again.

The materials are:

Play dough

9V battery leads

LED

My hypothesis was that the light would turn on when we placed the wires inside the play dough.

After finishing my science experiment I found out that my hypothesis was correct because as soon as we put the wires in the play dough it lit up straight away.

This is the science experiment we did

Out of all of the science experiments I did this was definitely my favourite experiment because I enjoyed the sensation of sticking the light in the play dough. Something I found challenging was putting the light in the right place because if you put it in the wrong way it didn’t work.

Have you ever done any science experiments?
